Meditation is Chicken Soup for the Mind
In today’s world it is very difficult to remain peaceful and calm. We are constantly bombarded with stress from our jobs, bad news on TV, and challenges coming at us from every direction. It eventually takes its toll on us because we don’t take the time to stop and reflect. Our minds need to be nurtured and nourished so that when things get rough, we are able to remain in a good place. Meditation can do that for us. It is chicken soup for the mind.
Meditation allows us to transition from negativity, anxiety, and fear, to clarity, creativity, and centeredness. A regular meditation practice can help in just about every area of life. If you have a problem, meditation will help you solve it. If you feel lost, meditation will help you find yourself. If you feel anxious, meditation will bring you peace.
If meditation is so great, why isn’t everyone doing it?
Meditation is not easy, at least not at first. It takes a lot of practice to turn off our thoughts and just “be” for a while. The mind wants to ponder tasks that need completing, relive an argument from yesterday, or make plans for an upcoming vacation. It has to be trained to be quiet. This can be very frustrating in the beginning, but with regular practice and patience you will reap so many benefits you’ll wonder why it took you so long to get started.
Benefits of Meditation

- It helps you find solutions to problems—in the space of quietness, new ways of looking at your situation reveal themselves to you.

In order to get the full benefits of meditation you must do it regularly. Only through a consistent practice will you learn how to quiet your mind and get to a peaceful state. Even if you can only meditate for 10 minutes each day, do it. You will soon begin to notice changes in yourself. You will feel more grounded, and you won’t have that knee-jerk reaction to situations or people that once pushed your buttons. As you work up to longer meditation sessions you will reap even greater rewards.
The best way to get started
Pick a time that works for you and stick with it until it becomes a habit. Some people prefer to meditate in the evening because it allows them to de-stress from their job, school, or whichever troubles they may have encountered during the day. I prefer to meditate first thing in the morning because it centers me and I am better able to deal with whatever awaits me. It doesn’t matter when you do it, the important thing is to be consistent about it.
You may also want to try experimenting with different types of meditation to find the one that’s right for you. Not all meditation is sitting in silence in the lotus position. If you prefer something more robust, try gong meditation (that will wake you up!), or meditating with singing bowls. Or you may prefer chanting, guided visualization, or yoga-based meditations. You may have to sample a few different types until you find the one you like best.
Of all the things you can do to improve your life and empower yourself, doing some form of meditation is the best in my opinion. Reconnecting with yourself and with God is critical for spiritual growth. Somewhere in the stillness you will find all the answers you have been searching for. I genuinely believe that it is the greatest gift you can give to yourself.
