Be the Change You Wish To See In Yourself
Are there things in your life you would like to change? Have you tried time and time again to better yourself in some way, only to find yourself going back to your old, familiar patterns? Do you make New Year’s resolutions every year, but never keep them? These are common problems that most people who are seeking change experience. We know that we can do better and we invest time and money trying to improve ourselves, but somehow the changes don’t last. We soon find ourselves right back where we started.
The problem lies in the way we try to create change in our lives. For example, if we want to get fit, change careers, or improve our finances, we would likely go about it by starting a new diet and exercise program, going back to school, and cutting back on spending, respectively. These methods all sound great except that they are all external, and change cannot be created by anything we do externally. Change must always start from within.
Just about everyone is familiar with Gandhi’s famous quote: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”, but few really understand what it means. For centuries, we have tried to eradicate war, hatred, poverty, and hunger through our actions to no avail, because actions only provide temporary solutions to permanent problems.
Change is not something that can be created through physical force or mandated by law. It cannot be wished or willed into being. Change is transformation, and the transformation of the world comes about when there is a global shift in the collective consciousness of its citizens. As more of us move towards being loving and peaceful creatures, we will experience more love and peace in the world.

The same principle applies to individuals. As soon as you experience a shift in your own consciousness, personal transformation can begin. But you must “be” the change you wish to see in yourself before it will happen.
The shift begins in your mind when you believe that your desired change is possible. If you are operating with the same limiting beliefs that created the condition you do not want, you will not be able to change it…at least not permanently. As British Philosopher James Allen tells us in his book As A Man Thinketh: “The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to be harmoniously related to his inner state. Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.”
For example, if you believe yourself to be unhealthy and overweight, all the diet and exercise in the world will not turn you into someone who is healthy and fit. You might lose some weight for a while, but it will soon return, and probably more abundantly than before. But the minute you can truly see yourself as a healthy, fit person….the moment you can feel that person inside of you….you will start acting like one. Your eating habits will change. You will want to exercise regularly and get more rest. You will find ways to relax and destress. And the next thing you know, you are that healthy, fit person. Change your mind and you will change your life.
So who are you? That is what you must decide now. Because the moment you do, the wheels will go into motion to make it so. You will find yourself slowly but steadily becoming that person. You will suddenly want to do whatever it takes to become healthier, or improve your financial situation, or start a new career….all the things the better version of you would do because that is who you are now on the inside. From there, it is only a matter of time before the new-and-improved you shows up on the outside too.
